La Fille mal gardée is a comic ballet in two acts. The ballet was originally choreographed by the Ballet Master Jean Dauberval to a pastiche of music based on fifty-five popular French airs.   La Fille Mal Gardée is as anxious to show off bad dancing as it is to show off the good, pleasing the audience with all manner of buffoonery. The ballet’s opening gives me a childish thrill. A clutch of chickens and their pompous rooster-ringleader perform a 4/5.

La Fille mal gardée made a welcome return to the ABT rep after a year absence. I’m not sure why ABT has ignored the classic Frederick Ashton comedy for all of these years; it is a beautiful, tender, humorous classic for all ages, filled with delightful surprises and innovative choreography.
